At this point Rockefeller hired a superintendent to oversee construction at his estate and on future bridges. These problems notwithstanding, the bridge clearly contributed to the spectacle of the site. On either side of its skewed arch are buttress-like towers that form viewing platforms at road level. The north wall faces a forty-foot waterfall that is in its full glory when the snow melts in early spring. When first built, the south-facing platforms gave a spectacular view over the Hadlock Ponds to the ocean beyond.

Ralston. Each of the arches is faced with granite, and the sides have an interesting mixture of large “quarryfaced” (rough-finished) blocks combined with smaller pieces of granite and occasional cobblestones. The upper deck has fine-tooled railings (parapets) that rise to a peak at the center and flare with the road at the approaches. On three sides, each parapet ends with an elaborate stone edifice, while on the fourth side is a viewing platform. Much of the bridge’s landscaping can still be identified as that selected by Beatrix Farrand.

Fog may limit the view, but it is not a deterrent for enjoying the carriage roads. Protected beneath a canopy of trees, the traveler can walk the welldrained roads with dry and secure footing. The fog’s thick, gray shroud creates an air of mystery as the road winds to some unseen distant point. With the long view obscured, your eye is drawn to the nearer beauty along the roadside. The leaves glow with brilliant greens against wet, dark tree trunks. Spider webs, laden with moisture, sparkle in an otherwise muted scene.
