It is also noteworthy that all of Selous’s early career, from which the four pieces below are taken, was spent in the same general part of Africa Livingstone covered in his first book, Missionary Travels and Researches in South Africa (1857). Once at Rugby, that stellar institution which, along with other public schools such as Eton and Harrow, did so much to shape the character of England’s leaders in the Victorian era, Selous proved every bit as active in real life as one might expect from a lad captured by dreams of distant lands and daring deeds.

Although the wagons of our Bamangwato friends were much less heavily laden than ours, their bullocks were much inferior, and on the whole in quite as sorry a plight. About ten o’clock it became impossible to get the wagons along at all, and we had to give up the idea of dragging them to the pools of Mahakabi, from which we were only about six miles distant, and where we had looked forward to enjoying a dinner as worthy as possible of Christmas Day. We therefore outspanned and prepared to drive all our cattle and horses to the water, let them have a good drink and feed there, and return to fetch the wagons in the afternoon.

By this juncture Selous was well known not only to the institute’s membership, but to those associated with British learned societies in general. He had already been a recipient of the Royal Geographical Society’s (RGS) Founders’ Gold Medal and had previously spoken to that organization. Many of the individuals in attendance would have belonged to both the RGS and the Royal Colonial Institute. Indeed, his association with the RGS would continue for many years, and he would eventually become a member of its governing council.
