The terms so frequently used by the novelists themselves to distinguish between fictional genres, "novel" and "romance," contribute to a simplifying literary history which forces a great variety of fiction into two vast territories, divided by a fence on which we find perched Scott and Dickens. "Romance" denotes as diverse a group of fictions as does "novel," and romances furnish the novel with a great variety of plot structures, narrative situations, character types, topoi, and degrees of distance from the actual world.

This does not mean that novelists always create or critics always demand purely verisimilarfictionalworlds, nor that the establishment of representational boundaries always arises at the prompting of champions of the real, or guardians of the proper. Indeed, readers demonstrably possess appetites for fictional worlds differing from their own, and fictional worlds create the desire that they also satisfy. As Wolfgang Iser puts it in "Toward a Literary Anthropology," the consciousness of a gap or difference between actual and fictional worlds is instigated by the existence of the imaginary: if we regard the world of the text as being bracketed off from the world it represents, it follows that that which is within the bracket is separated from the reality in which it is usually embedded.

To these borders we should add the line that isolates the represented space of fiction from the spectators or readers. Accordingly, fiction is surrounded by sacred borders, by actuality borders, and by representational borders . . Within these fuzzy, multiple borders, fictionalterritories grow in accordance with various patterns. (81) Unabashedly embracing the spatial metaphors that disconcert some theorists, Pavel reminds us that the "various patterns" of generic difference have often been conceptualized in geographical terms.
