She then considers whether some kinds of pupil talk are more educationally significant than others, and argues that exploratory talk has a distinctive and central role. This chapter contains the first published account of the three types of talkdisputational, cumulative and exploratorywhich feature prominently throughout the rest of this book. This typology develops some sociocultural concepts for analysing peer learning and so begins to fill a gap in this area noted in Chapter 2. Here Fisher presents each type of talk through a description of the functions of utterances.
In Chapter 5 Rupert Wegerif and Neil Mercer close Section 1 by summarising what has been learnt from the previous chapters and by outlining a new dialogical framework for the analysis of classroom talk which combines a typology of the main social modes of thinking available in peer talk with a schema of levels of analysis to help in applying the `types of talk' framework to studies of classroom discourse. In the second section of the book various elements from the theoretical framework developed in the first section are applied to studies of classroom talk around computers.
